“Leadership is all about people. It is not about organisations. It is not about plans. It is not about strategies. It is all about people … motivating people to get the job done. You have to be people-centred.” Colin Powell
Why is it that so many problems, and underperformances in organisations, are caused by a lack of understanding by leaders and managers of what makes people tick, and what motivates and inspires them to “go ballistic” in order to achieve the results required?
When people are treated well, consulted, and their views sought and respected, they react with enthusiasm, passion, professionalism, and commitment to deliver exceptional results.
I have been asked on occasions how does experience in larger organisations translate across into a smaller one. We, at Sewells, have worked in and with large organisations, small ones, medium sized ones. The one common thing is … they have always been successful companies. Why?
Because the people recruited to deliver the job not only understood what they were doing, but also they were motivated and trained to do it well by proper leaders who coached and inspired them brilliantly.
It’s not the scale that matters, it’s the attitude, commitment, care, and respect shown by the leader with a laser-like focus on enabling outcomes that deliver success time and time again.
When everybody in the organisation knows what needs to be done, feels fully supported when times get tough, feels valued and safe, when they can laugh together and occasionally even shed a tear together, the ‘team spirit’ that is created usually never fails to deliver performance and results beyond expectations.
True success in any business is the ability to consistently deliver for customers through a united and positive team effort, to deliver outcomes with others and for others. And the result? A terrific, future-proofed workplace where everyone gives their best to play their full part in “making it” (whatever the “it” might be) happen.
