How to develop genuine ownership and accountability in the workplace

In 2017, we noticed an increasing frustration among leaders and managers because of a significant lack of ownership and accountability from their employees.

Without ownership and accountability, operational excellence (i.e. execution, performance and results) suffers.

Taking ownership, as a minimum, means that if we recognise certain things are material to achieving desired results, we take the initiative to bring it to the attention of the right people.

Accountability is about following through and making sure what needs to be provided, or done, is provided and done!

It’s recognising that other team members, or teams, depend on the results of our work – and wanting to deliver this (or to be willing to let them down).

It’s also about good, open, proactive communication to keep other team members/teams informed on the status of your commitments (because it has a direct impact on their ability to make their commitments).

When team members consistently demonstrate ownership and accountability …  trust is formed and an unstoppable team spirit is developed.

The improvements in operational excellence, performance and results that are achieved because of this are BREATHTAKING!
